Man's finger pushing button and flushing toilet

The toilet and toilet can be a single block or, more often, separate. In the cistern, the valve of the faucet drive by a lever that ends in a float. When this mechanism works properly, the valve will close as the volume of the water raises the float and is completely closed when the water reaches its maximum level.

Blue cleaning water-soluble tablet falls into the water drain the toilet tank.

When the cistern is drawn, the water discharged through the toilet through a hollow rim and pushes the water in the siphon and the waste into the pipe. Some cisterns allow you to choose between a minimum or maximum discharge, according to the needs of the moment. In this way, can save water considerable.

A damaged toilet can lose several tens of gallons of water per hour. Therefore, it is best to quickly solve the problem. Here’s what you can do in every situation.

Cleaning and Replacement of Parts

To disassemble the mechanism, turn off the safety valve or, if it is not, the main faucet. Then raise the float. Unscrew and remove the faucet by checking the sequence of operations. Clean the various parts, replace worn or damaged gaskets, and reassemble the faucet. If it is old, it may not be sufficient to clean it, and in this case, it is best to install a new one. It is convenient to take the old faucet when you buy the new one so that the seller can provide you with a model with the appropriate dimensions.
The tank fills very slowly

This slowness can be caused by low water pressure in the pipe or by any problem in the flush. Start by checking the outlet pressure of the water. If it is poorly powered, confirm that your neighbors also have the same problem. Otherwise, it is better to call a plumber. If the problem is common, contact the water supply company. If you do not notice any pressure problem, check:

  • the sealing of the rubber gasket;
  • The faucet valve, If it clogged, disassemble and cleans it. Take the opportunity to replace the gaskets and clean the tank.
The tank fills little or excess

In either case, it is necessary to examine the float: either raise it or lower it in order to properly regulate the water inlet. If the float does not have an adjustment mechanism, slightly bend the lever: down if the water level is excessive; if it is insufficient.
It may happen that the float rubs against the wall of the tank, and may even become trapped. In this case, slightly pull the lever until the float can move freely. Then check again if the water reaches the proper level (if necessary, adjust it once again as indicated above).

At the bottom of the cistern, the sealing is ensured by a rubber gasket. When this joint is very dirty or hardened (due to liming of the water) constant leaks occur. Try to solve this problem by cleaning the gasket and the part of the tank on which it rests. If the operation does not work, it may be necessary to replace the gasket. But before that, make sure that assembling the joint upside down solves the problem. If you are buying a new gasket, take the old one to serve as a model, since there are many types, of various sizes.

If you pour out about one liter of vinegar in the tank from time to time (twice a year in case the water is very limestone) and let it act overnight, it will reduce the frequency of the problems we have pointed out.
